Nearly the whole field has been searching downstream for the leak in the dam, measuring biological results of the disease process and never addressing root cause — or searching tiny little tributaries of genetic predisposition far upstream of the leak, coupled with massive misinterpretation of data, and still missing root cause. The third area of exploration is environmental, and those findings merely intensify or make more frequent the original infant separation trauma and/or the subsequent precipitating factor which sets the whole process in motion. Without original separation-from- mother trauma these disorders are unlikely to occur.
More overwhelming than war trauma to a soldier is separation from mother to a baby, because for as long as mammals populated the earth, separation from mother has meant death. Onset is usually in adolescence because that is when the first intense romance fails. Instead of a loud noise precipitating the flashback it is separation that precipitates the initial step back in time.
Marie, one part of my treatment process nearly had me run out of town. Early in my practice I discovered that if we accomplished complete, total separation from original nuclear family, the entire psychotic process disappeared. When I told this to one of the seven division heads of the Ukrainian National Academy of Science, he started to chuckle. They had just conducted a study, taking a group of persons with schizophrenia to the top of some mountain, because they hypothesized there was less schizophrenia in Switzerland because they lived high in the mountains, which would cause the brain to put out more endorphins. After two to three months all the symptoms were gone. When they returned home, within two months all were symptomatic once more.
When people would ask how long must they remain separate, I would say “for as long as the alcoholic must separate from the bottle” — because the infant-on-the- bottle mind/brain/reality is the same process. That changed one day when I was awakened one morning by the most authoritative voice I ever heard. The first time that happened had been 30 years earlier. Each time it occurred it was very informative and helpful, and each time it was when it was time to get up in the morning, and each time it came in four statements. The second time it gave new insight into my primary treatment recommendation. The first statement was 1. Separate because it works, 2. Allow time for the person to become independent and self sufficient, 3. Educate patient and family how to interact, what to say and what to avoid [this is where the EE factor (expressed emotion) becomes important], 4. Allow a 5 minute phone visit with careful monitoring of the patient over the next 72
hours. Telepathically added was the implication that the patient must never move back in to live with original nuclear family again.
I asked a man, who owned ten alcohol treatment facilities, what happens when a recovered alcoholic moves back home with original nuclear family. He laughed and said they go right back to the bottle. It’s the same process.
