The Mount Everest of Monuments in North Dakota
The average dairy cow produces 150 pounds of
body waste each day. Approximately 100 pounds
is urine, and approximately 50 pounds is feces.
A farm of ten cows would produce 1,000 pounds of
urine and 500 pounds of feces each day. That adds
up to 365,000 pounds of urine each year and 182,500
pounds of manure.
A farm of one hundred cows would produce 10,000
pounds of urine each day and 5,000 pounds of feces.
That adds up to 3,650,000 pounds of urine each
year and 1,825,000 pounds of feces.
A farm of one thousand cows would produce 100,000
pounds of urine each day and 50,000 pounds of feces.
That adds up to 36,500,000 pounds of urine each
year and 18,250,000 pounds of feces.

In March of 2010, an application was made
for a 28,000 cow farm in North Dakota.
A farm of twenty eight thousand cows would produce
2,800,000 pounds of urine each day and 1,400,000 pounds
of feces. That adds up to over 1 billion pounds of urine
each year and in excess of one-half billion pounds of
feces.

South Dakota is home to one of America’s great tourist
attractions, Mount Rushmore, a sculpture of four American
presidents cut into a granite mountain.
What does North Dakota have?
Nothing really, until now…
Imagine a giant cow chip sculpted to dishonor the memories
of four of America’s worst presidents. I’d choose LBJ and
Nixon as two of the four. Although there might be some
controversy, others might select Bill Clinton to occupy
third position. Who might the fourth be? Hint: Who is the
least popular president in the history of polling?
Regardless.. .here’s what’s coming to North Dakota:

“EDGELEY, N.D. — An $80 million dairy operation
could start construction later this summer if
permits from the state’s health department and
water commission can be secured.
“A public meeting was held Tuesday in Edgeley
concerning the proposed operation slated for
north of Berlin and northeast of Edgeley.
“According to Ralph Friebel, president of Frontier
Dairy, the operation would milk 10,000 cows at
any time with another 2,000 dry cows and 16,000
heifers on the premises. Output from the operation
would average 800,000 pounds of milk per day.”

The new North Dakota cow chip mountain will attract
visitors from around the world, and join the long
list of other North Dakota tourist attractions such
as the KVLY television tower which is the most vertical
manmade structure in the world. Our cow chip might be
placed smack dab in the middle of the state which happens
to be the location of the geographical center of North
America, should anybody care. Not to be forgotten is
the world’s largest cow structure in New Salem. One might
consider placing the new cow chip monument just to the
rear of and south of the world’s largest cow tail…
New York’s Statue of Liberty has this Emma Lazarus
inscription at its base:
“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses…”
The giant cow turd might serve as a monument to the
dairy industry’s milk marketing myths, and borrow
a classic line from a no-nonsense President:
“Boys, I may not know much, but I know chicken
shit from chicken salad.
