Berry Good Advice
I drink one or more fruit smoothies each and every
day and was very much pleased when I observed my
daughter Sarah “borrowing” blueberries, strawberries,
frozen cranberries and two bananas from my horde to
fix herself a breakfast smoothie.
Perhaps she saw the results of a newly published study
in the March 3, 2010 issue of the European Journal of
Clinical Nutrition. Finnish scientists fromt the University
of Turku found that overweight women who consumed berries
during their 20-week study experienced phenomenal rates
of liver cleansing (a decrease in fatty liver syndrome).
Researchers concluded:
“This may contribute positively to the low-grade
systemic inflammation in body and decrease the risk
of cardiovascular diseases.”
A few years ago, I came across a similar study of interest
published in the March 17, 2008 issue of the British Journal
of Nutrition (99:3, 674–681). Scientists in the Department
of Preventive Cardiology, Ulleval University Hospital, Oslo,
Norway assessed the consumption of fruit and berries on the
cardiovascular systems of elderly men (ages 65-75).
Researchers measured the internal thickness of the carotid
artery in 547 men through ultrasound and determined that the
healthiest unclooged arteries belonged to the fruit and berry
eaters.
This is berry, berry good news, indeed!
